University of Witwatersrand

Wits University proposes to focus its development of the next generation of African scholars in two areas critical to Africa: Global Change Research and Academic Medicine. We will develop models for training, retaining, and supporting young researchers that are tailored to the needs of these disciplines, but which will also inform the development of a long-term coherent institutional strategy for developing all young academics. We propose a programme that builds on our research strengths and addresses institutional priorities and needs, while also looking outward to our African partners. We will develop Wits’ young academics and also seek to attract students, emerging researchers, and distinguished scholars from other African countries for training and scholarly exchanges. We believe that the investment in intra-African collaborations will be mutually reinforcing, contribute to strong intellectual networks on the continent, and help ensure the sustainability of our programmes.
